On your marks....to help a good cause
Wigan Borough's first ever 10k road race has been officially
launched and residents are being asked to take their places on the
starting line to help a good cause.
Taking place on Sunday 8 September at 10am the race will start
and finish in Wigan town centre passing a number of local landmarks
along the route. The event has been organised by local charity
Joining Jack in conjunction with Wigan Council and Wigan Leisure
& Culture Trust.
Joining Jack was established by former Wigan Warriors player
Andy Johnson and his wife Alex following the devastating news that
their five year old son, Jack, has an incurable muscle wasting
condition known as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).
And whilst Joining Jack hopes to raise as much money and
awareness as possible for DMD, the charity is also inviting a
number of other local good causes to participate in the event.
These include The Mayor's Charity, Joseph's Goal, Wigan Rotary
Club, Wigan & Leigh Hospice and Wigan Youth Zone. Individual
runners can also participate for a cause close to their own
Jack's parents, Andy and Alex are pleased to announce the
"It is less than twelve months since we started Joining Jack
and it is unbelievable that in such a short space of time the
charity is launching an event of this scale. We continue to be
amazed and grateful to receive such support for our son and other
boys with this incurable condition. It was because of the level of
support we have received locally that we wanted to involve other
charities in this event. It should be a really great day and we
can't wait to see everyone with us on the starting line"
And there are other ways to contribute if your running shoes
have seen better days The race organisers are looking for
volunteers to help out on the day and of course as many spectators
as possible along the route to cheer on the runners.
Charity trustee and race organiser, Matt Johnson said "The
charity approached the local authority last year with the initial
idea and were encouraged by the response received. Since then the
encouragement and support from organisations such as the council,
Wigan Leisure & Cultural Trust and Greater Manchester Police
has meant that the idea has turned into reality and we are now
launching the inaugural Wigan Borough 10k race. Wigan is known for
its sporting heritage so an event like this is a perfect way for
people of all abilities to get involved and maybe even set
themselves a challenge. With plenty of activities planned for the
town centre also it should be a great family and community event.
So whether you are a serious runner, enthusiastic amateur,
potential volunteer or business looking to get involved please
register or get in touch"
Lord Peter Smith, Leader of Wigan Council, says: "The Wigan 10k
promises to be a fantastic event, which the council is delighted to
support. Not only is it an opportunity for people to raise money
for good causes, it will also be a great showcase for Wigan town
centre. There will be lots of events before and after the run so
even if you don't feel up to taking part you can still get
"Joining Jack is a local charity, close to the hearts of many
people in Wigan Borough. I'm pleased the council is working with
them to put on this ambitious event. Hopefully lots of money will
be raised and everyone will have a day to remember."
