Cannabidiol (CBD)
Duchenne sufferers are often prescribed steroids, to help prevent inflammation in their damaged muscles. This prevention of inflammation is considered to be a ‘gold standard’ in DMD care, however the side effects of long term use are profound. CBD, a plant derived phytocannabinoid, has an excellent safety profile, and preliminary data supports the fact that muscle cells are more oxidative following CDB treatment. The potential outcome of increasing the oxidative status of muscles with CBD is threefold – it can suppress the level of inflammation in muscle of DMD patients, increase resistance to fatigue and lead to a potential increase in muscle mass.
